Now that, I hope anyway, my post from last night about the horrific events of 2005 has settled with you all, I wanted to fill in a few blanks about how music was my saving grace during that period of my life.
I got to thinking about the music that really mattered to me during those times. I was inboxing a friend on Twitter about that period and came across this remarkable twist of fate with music where everything truly came full circle.
In writing that piece yesterday about the horrible events of 2005, my one saving grace was Mariah’s The Emancipation of Mimi album. The lady I was living with at the time bought it for me for my 30th birthday. Then it and the rest of my CD’s were stolen while I was on the streets— Music_Is_life (@hip_hop_1989) November 26, 2019
When I went back home, my mom gave it to me for a Christmas.— Music_Is_life (@hip_hop_1989) November 26, 2019
Years later, I gave it to a mentally ill friend who needed it.
Yet, when I inherited my sister’s CD collection there it was.
The biggest and most important album of my whole life.@MariahCarey
People in my everyday life have never understood why Mariah's music has meant so much to me over the years. I truly felt that I could relate to her. As I wrote earlier in the piece about the first time I fell ill due to mental illness and how DMX was so important to me as I was healing, Mariah had a similar impact in a similar situation.
Different artists speak to us and allow us to relate to their art at different periods in our lives.
The power of music as an art form can truly not be understated.
It's the one piece of art that most anyone can relate to.
It has the power to connect us all.
Music is the gift.
