Simpler Times (Part 1)

Hey there everybody.

As I sit here writing, I'm listening to Yo-Yo's debut album in the Tomahawk media player on my MacBook, thinking about how even a little over 10 years ago, everything was a lot simpler. I mean, back in 2007, I came into some money and bought some extravagant things, like a top of the line HP notebook, brand new PS3 and 360, and spent a lot of money on CD's and clothes. And, of course, a brand new mp3 player. Wasn't an iPod, but it did the job. I look back at the internet then, before the social media takeover, and before smartphones and streaming media took over the world.

however, even better than that, I think back to the year before the new millennium, 1999. At the time, i was working two jobs. I worked as a telephone collection agent by day, and in a retail clothing store at night. There was money to spend on new clothes, always hot music to buy in the record store, and a shiny new Playstation hooked up to my tiny 13 inch color television. There was always food to eat, weed to be smoked, and of course the NBA on NBC every Sunday. I think of those times quite fondly.

I say all that to say this. A Playstation, which would have constituted an extravagant purchase to my grandparents, who never had cable TV or even a CD player, was really all you needed back then. The Internet wasn't available en masse like it is today, and wasn't a basic necessity like it is now.
